Around the 1950s Barcelona entered a phase of rapid expansion. The architect I. Cerda was appointed to design a new neighbourhood, Eixample - meaning “extension” or “enlargement” in Catalan. From his original plans only the grid pattern of the blocks has remained. In terms of the architectural design this district was way ahead of its time.
Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and especially Gaudà were amongst the greatest architects of Catalan history. Some of their most famous buildings can be found in Eixample. This neighbourhood is almost like an open-air museum! But Eixample is also a chic shopping district, all the big brands have outlets in this area so there is always something to see and do!
